"Buartnut" hybrid
(Juglans cinerea x Juglans ailantifolia)
Description and growing
The” Buartnut” tree is not found in the wild, it was accidentally created as a result of cross-pollination between the” gray” and” heartnut ” walnut. Both original species in nature grew too far from each other in North America and Japan, but still, they met and gave good offspring. This is one of the few hybrids obtained not thanks to breeders but through the efforts of nature itself.
This hybrid has completely new species characteristics, and most importantly, it is the “Buartnut” nut trees that grow from its nuts, and not gray or heartnut ones.
From the original species “Buartnut” tree took all the best, as a result of which a strong tree was formed, which gives delicious fruits with a thin shell. In addition, the fat content of nuts is higher than that of walnuts. And there is less bitterness in them, thanks to a small amount of tannins.
Most likely, most people have never even heard of the existence of the “Buartnut” tree. This nut tree is not yet very common in Latvian gardens, but we are sure that it has a great future.
The” Buartnut ” is a tall tree with a powerful trunk, medicinal leaves, and tasty, healthy fruits.
The tree begins to bear fruit six years after planting. The older the plantation, the higher the yield. From a twenty-year-old tree, the gardener will collect about 8 buckets of fruit. Nuts ripen in September.
The length of the fruit is 3-4 centimeters, the width is 3 centimeters. In shape, they are slightly elongated and heart-shaped. There are no partitions inside the fruit. The content of tannins in nuts is low, so there is no bitterness in them.
Every year the tree bears more and more fruits. Unlike walnuts, the fruits of ”Buartnut” grow in clusters of 8-12 pieces. Divided in half, they resemble a medallion in appearance.
One of the positive qualities of wood is its high frost resistance. Culture can adapt to the harsh climate. Even a slightly frozen nut recovers quickly.
”Buartnut” walnut is undemanding to the composition of the soil. It will grow well on both loamy and sandy soils. But for it to grow rapidly and improve immunity, it is better to plant this tree in fertile soil.
The place for planting should be chosen sunny. The more sunlight hits the crown, the higher the yield will be.
Genetics of our seedlings
All our nut tree seedlings are grown from the best seeds of mother trees from Canadian varieties that give seedlings a better chance to adapt to the Latvian climate, soil, and light regime and make them stronger and more durable than seedlings propagated vegetatively. But it does not allow the classification of them as one hundred percent seedlings of varieties, as for the harvest of nuts there is a need for cross-pollination with other nut trees.
