"Manchurian" walnut
(Juglans mandzurica)

Description and growing

“Manchurian Walnut” belongs to the genus Walnut. This is an amazing ornamental tree, which also gives valuable and tasty fruits. It does not require special care, as it has excellent winter hardiness – it impresses with its growth power and huge leaf scope. The culture is considered monoecious, in other words, male and female inflorescences grow on the same tree. The second name of the plant is Dumbey Walnut.

The homeland of this walnut is considered to be the northeast of China, to be more precise, the area called Manchuria. In nature, it also grows on the Korean Peninsula and in the Far East of Russia, in particular in the Amur region, Primorye, and Sakhalin.

The Manchurian walnut is very cold-resistant and can withstand frost down to -45 ° C.
Externally, the Manchurian walnut is quite remarkable. The crown of the tree is sprawling and somewhat resembles a ball. The color of the bark is almost dark gray, but the shade of the shoots is brown. Under natural conditions, the height of adult representatives of culture can reach 30 m, and the life expectancy is high – up to 300 years. At the same time, the active growth of the tree continues only up to 80-90 years, after which the process slows down.

The leaves of the Manchurian walnut are characterized by rather large size, unlike their closest relative – the Walnut. Interestingly, one leaf consists of 8-20 oblong and smaller leaflets with jagged edges. On average, the total length of the leaves is about 50 cm, but there are specimens whose leaf sizes reach 100 cm. In summer, the foliage is rich emerald, but by autumn it acquires a golden hue.

The plant begins to bear fruit at the age of 7-10 years. Flowering occurs in April and May, but the fruit crop can be harvested in early summer autumn. In shape, the nuts resemble an oval, and the size is about 3-5 cm in diameter. Fruits are in bunches of 2-7 fruits on each branch. The shell of the Manchurian nut is durable and its thickness reaches 5 mm.

The uniqueness of the Manchurian walnut lies in its unique healing properties. The plant is widely used in pharmaceuticals and folk medicine since it contains many useful substances in its composition. Preparations made from Manchurian walnuts have a strong analgesic, antifungal, and antiparasitic effect. They dilate blood vessels, heal wounds, and act as an excellent antiseptic. After use, vitality noticeably increases, the condition of hair and skin improves, and the functioning of the digestive system improves. Green fruits are used to make jams, and wood is used in furniture production.

The Manchurian Walnut grows at a tremendous pace for the first 20 years up to 2 m per year. In its lifetime, it grows up to 30 m and even higher. In the northern regions and the Far East, it can grow in the form of a bush and bear fruit like a tree.

The Manchurian nut tree likes well-drained fertile soils with a neutral PH reaction. Prefers well-lit areas. Thanks to a well-developed, powerful root system, it can withstand strong gusts of wind. It tolerates polluted air and city smoke well.
