"Hican" hybrid
(Carya ovata x Carya illinoinensis)

Description and growing

“Hican” nut trees are natural hybrids between Hickory (Carya ovata; Carya laciniosa) and Pecan (Carya Illinoinensis), their name is a combination of both words – “HiCan”. Hickory and pecan trees often grow together, which allows them to interbreed naturally and form hybrids.
Hickory nut trees can be divided into two categories:

  • “Shagbark hickory “x “Pecan” (C. Ovata x C. Illinoinensis) – hybridization results in more frost-resistant trees with higher yields but smaller nuts.
  • “Shagbark hickory “x “Pecan” (C. Laciniosa x C. Illinoinensis) – hybrids give larger nuts, but for them to be able to fully ripen, a hotter summer is needed.

Hickory nut trees can grow up to 40 meters tall, and if there is enough space around, they mostly develop round crowns. Therefore, it is recommended to plant these trees at a distance of about 10-15 meters from each other. Grows well on fertile, well-drained, loamy neutral or slightly acidic soils. Hickan nut trees love warm and sunny locations that are protected from strong winds for at least the first 5 years. At this time, it is advisable to install a slight shading on the seedlings. This tree is difficult to transplant because it has a large taproot, so it is advisable to plant it already in the first year.
The plant is self-fertile, but some trees can form male flowers with sterile pollen, so it is advisable to plant several trees to get a good harvest. The first harvest of nuts will have to wait about 6-8 years. These trees give nuts with an elongated shape, a thin shell, a large core, and an excellent sweet taste. When growing hickory nut trees, it is necessary to take into account the fact that all hybrids are very unstable – the grown tree and its nuts can take on the characteristics of hickory or pecan more.
At the moment, in our nursery, we grow Hickan nut trees from the above-mentioned first category (Ovata x C. Illinoinensis). Seeds are taken from adult trees of the “Burton” variety growing in Canada, which are very frost-resistant and productive.

Genetics of our seedlings

All our nut tree seedlings are grown from the best seeds of mother trees from Canadian varieties that give seedlings a better chance to adapt to the Latvian climate, soil, and light regime and make them stronger and more durable compared to seedlings that are propagated vegetatively. But it does not allow to classification of them as one hundred percent seedlings of varieties, as for the harvest of nuts there is a need for cross-pollination with other nut trees.
